Living without sleep can be devastating, as anyone who suffers from insomnia knows. In the following vignettes, three people share how chasing sleep has had a profound impact on their lives.

A Day Late, A Dollar Short Fran, a fifty-something sales professional, sleeps fitfully most nights. She works long hours and suspects that’s due, in part, to her difficulty staying on task. Her greatest challenge at work, however, is an inability to stay on schedule. In years past, Fran never missed a meeting; in fact, she was usually the first to arrive. Since insomnia has taken over her life, though, missed appointments have become commonplace.

Because Fran’s livelihood is sales, being late to an appointment can equal loss of income. Compounding her troubles is her difficulty paying attention during those appointments. Believing herself to be suffering Attention Deficit Disorder, she had herself tested but the results were inconclusive. Much more likely, the psychologist concluded, was that her chronic insomnia was interfering with her focus.

Taking steps to get her sleeping back on track, Fran found herself back in the game once sleepless nights were rare. Her schedule no longer derailed, she breezed through presentations and her sales figures climbed. Who would have thought getting a good night’s sleep could have such an impact on her bottom line?

A Study in Sleep Deprivation Rick, on the other hand, was still training for his career. Smart and ambitious, he carried a heavy course load at college. Determined to be at the top of his class, Rick studied late into the night the first year at school and did well in every course.

Unfortunately, his habit of skipping sleep evolved into a pattern of chronic insomnia the following year. No longer able to shut down after studying, his mind raced for hours after he hit the pillow. As a result, his grades began to suffer, and staying awake in class became a real struggle. His normally copious notes from lectures dwindled to sketchy outlines of what he remembered. His standing in his class plummeted, bringing on a new anxiety that kept him awake nights.

Late in his sophomore year, Rick’s fiancé suggested he take part in a sleep study. He learned he was seriously sleep-deprived, at a level that endangered his health. An irregular heart rate and slowed metabolism were two of the warning signals that his body was craving sleep. He’d known he was overly-tired, but had no idea his lack of sleep could have such an impact on his body’s systems. This "wake-up call" was the impetus he needed to take action to end his insomnia.

insomnia Runs in the Family Which brings us to Anna, a stay-at-home mother with three small children. During her days, Anna worked efficiently to keep her household in order. Her youngest child recently developed colic, triggering a pattern of interrupted sleep. Even as his symptoms subsided, her sleep remained fractured, to the point she was sleeping no more than an hour at a time without waking.

Anna’s husband was the first to realize she had moved beyond tiredness to serious fatigue. His normally cheerful wife was having outbursts of rage, and the children were reacting to the tension. Even with his extra help around the house, Anna swung between exhaustion and anger.

I’d love to tell you that Anna was able to quickly find her balance, but her chronic lack of sleep continued to take its toll on the family. Not only were everyday chores neglected, her relationship with her husband also suffered. Anna balked when he suggested they find help to restore her normal sleep patterns. Ironically, the long-term lack of sleep left Anna depressed and unmotivated to find a cure for her insomnia.

Only when her husband suggested a separation did Anna realize the toll her sleep deprivation had taken. Working with her naturopath, Anna found her way back to a full night’s sleep. She marvels now at the tragic legacy her insomnia could have had for her children, and is grateful every night for a good night’s sleep.

From stories like these and countless others, we know that insomnia impacts much more than a person’s sleep. The complex systems of the body can be seriously disrupted when restorative sleep is absent. Our bodies, our minds and our emotions are linked inexorably with the balance of sleeping and wakefulness each of us needs.

Whether caused by all-night study sessions gone amok, a disruption in the family schedule or a cause we may not recognize, finding a way to regain normal sleep patterns is essential. When sleeplessness threatens our health, our families or our livelihood, it’s time to get answers for what’s keeping us awake.

His work has proved this countless times. Matthew’s mission is to pull back the curtain on those cures.

For many of us with sleep problems the nights seem long and the days a time of irritability and tiredness. Getting a restful eight hours of sleep is something our body and mind needs and we deserve.

There are many ways to support the mind in getting the sleep we need. Relaxation from stress, a good sleep environment and the correct choice of foods we eat are but three such remedies. The third of these, the food and drink we consume before we go to bed, can have a major effect on the quality of rest we get.

We have all heard of foods that help us sleep and how eating certain things for lunch can slow down our work rate during the afternoon. Then there is the notion that eating turkey can, in some way, put us to sleep.
We have been led to believe that certain foods make us tired, while in actual fact what is happening is a chemical reaction within the body that is causing amino acids to affect our brain activity in such a way as to induce a sleeping mode.

The best example to explain this is the drinking of warm milk just before going to bed. When we drink warm milk, (I am not sure why it has to be warm!) the tryptophan it contains triggers the body to release melatonin, which is a natural sleep hormone. Some foods, it turns out help us sleep and others do the reverse.

The sleep inducing serotonin and melatonin are triggered in the body by the amino acid tryptophan, and serotonin is a neurotransmitter that slows down brain activity, like slowing down the electricity to the brain.
The nerve traffic to the brain slows down, your brain isn’t so’ busy’ and sleep comes much easier. Therefore, eating foods with more trytophan helps build more and more relaxing neurotransmitters and this helps make you sleepy.

Foods high on the glycemic index are not a good idea as they release sugar into the bloodstream which triggers insulin which does make us sleepy but the side effects are that it produces a weight gain and often does not produce the correct deep sleeping pattern. So, the best evening snacks are eaten before nine o’clock, are not high on the glycemic index and contain complex carbs, protein and some calcium. Calcium is a helper in that it helps the process along. Obviously, dairy foods like milk and cheese are very good candidates!

Bearing all this in mind, here are my top five evening snacks that help me with my sleeping problems:

1. Cottage Cheese: this is light, easy to use and comes in a variety of added fruit flavors. Dairy products contain the magic tryptophan but also have the calcium and low glycemic value.

2. Sugar Free Whole Grain Cereal with Milk: Again we have the dairy but this time with whole wheat cereal (whole wheat bread would have a similar effect) which is fairly low on the glycemic
index but will trigger some insulin production which again will induce sleep without the weight
gain problems.

3. Oatmeal Cookies and a Glass of Milk: by now you should be seeing the trend! The addition of oatmeal also helps a little with lowering cholesterol.

4. Half a Banana on Whole Wheat Toast: Bananas contain magnesium as you know but they also contain both melatonin and serotonin which will help us feel drowsy. The whole wheat toast will trigger some insulin production, as it is a carbohydrate, and this will also help sleeping without causing a weight gain. (…and also go a little way in lowering cholesterol.)

5. Chamomile Tea: okay this isn’t a snack but add an oatmeal cookie and you have a winner. Chamomile has a mild sedating effect and is well known among the sleeping problems crowd. The oatmeal cookie triggers insulin but has some other good side effects.

These are my five favorite snacks, and although I am not a doctor or trained nutritionist, I think they fit the “sleep inducing foods” bill without causing other bad side effects, besides which I really like them! Yes I did leave out turkey because how often do I have turkey around to use as a late night snack!

Remember also that light meals are preferred over heavy and to avoid, the spicy, the fatty, the caffeine and the alcohol. Also that it takes over an hour for the tryptophan induced amino acids to reach the brain so don’t leave it too late.

A little science and a sensible snack we really like, can really help with our sleep problems.

Regrettably, sleep apnea also affects children in the same troubling ways that it affects adults. It is more common for it to affect children usually under the ages of three to six. It is of concern that with children it could leave them with ongoing problems, such as learning difficulties, mood and behaviour problems and poor interactive abilities if the condition is not noticed and remains undiagnosed and untreated, and, in worse cases, this could lead to high blood pressure and heart problems.

Causes

Sleep apnea which is a common sleep disorder happens when someone stops breathing for an average of 30 seconds and is caused by a blockage in the airway. The majority of cases in children result from enlarged tonsils, adenoids or even Infection.

Due to facial or structural deformities, some children suffer from narrowing of the airway. It is sometimes the case that children are born with a smaller opening of the throat, even a smaller jaw, or enlarged tongue.

Craniofacial syndromes such as Down Syndrome, Pierre Robin Sequence and Treacher Collins Syndrome are disorders which can also cause facial deformities. These syndromes cause structural deformities and poor muscle tone in the jaw mouth and nose which would leave the children open to a greater risk of developing sleep apnea.

Tumours found in the airways can also cause sleep apnea as the tumour diminishes the muscle tone and therefore causes an obstruction.

Although rarer in children, obesity can also be a cause or a contributory factor as the fatty cell that amass in the throat tissue result in the narrowing of the airway.

Symptoms

In children as in adults, loud and heavy snoring is always the first symptom of sleep apnea. It is very important for parents to look for other symptoms of the disorder as well, because in the case of children, roughly 10 ‘ 20% of them snore at some point even if they do not have the condition.

Some other symptoms are mouth breathing, bedwetting awkward sleeping positions, excessive sweating when asleep, hyperactivity, excessive tiredness, short-term attention span and aggressiveness, and behavioural problems.

Some children may also do poorly in school, and have learning, or growing problems relative to their age.

Children with sleep apnea are usually thin and may experience weight loss, unlike adults who have the tendency to get overweight This is because obstruction in the airway, especially in the throat and nose area, makes eating quite uncomfortable. Due to abnormal breathing patterns, the burning of calories is also at a higher rate.

Treatments

As the enlargement of tonsils and adenoids is the common cause of sleep apnea in children, tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy, where enlarged tonsils and adenoids are removed, are the usual treatment.

The continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine would most probably be prescribed to those who wouldn’t benefit from such surgeries or perhaps may go on to develop complications after going through them. This is a nose mask which delivers pressurized air and keeps airways open and is connected to a machine. Parents need to realize that CPAP may be a little uncomfortable to use, but with some adjustments will usually allow the children to get to use to it.

Sleep apnea in children is very worrying for parents and children alike and requires immediate medical attention. If it is suspected that their child has this sleep disorder, parents must act promptly and arrange to see the doctor or a sleep specialist. The severity of the case and identification of treatments will be based on the symptoms, medical evidence of enlargement of tonsils and adenoids, and sleep test results.

There are several ways to overcome snoring and sleep apnea, be it the more standard approach of treating the symptoms or by alternative treatments to treat the cause. However one thing is certain, one needs to have good nights sleep. So check out the information at http://www.snoringsleepapnea-treatment.com

Every driver has seen the signs at the side of the motorway. Tiredness kills – take a break. But according to research released by the Government, sleep-related vehicle accidents (SRVAs) are on the increase, and those most at risk are drivers who have to drive high mileage as part of their work.

The data collected by the Department of Transport has suggested that insufficient sleep and disrupted circadian rhythms (biological rhythms that include the internal ‘clock’, which influences when, how much, and how well people sleep) contribute not only to major public health issues in general, but to road traffic accidents in particular. The average night’s sleep in the UK has fallen by an hour and a half every night and with the current pressure on employees to work harder and longer hours, many drivers may be asked or even feel pressurised into doing extra shifts, work into the evening or accept very early morning starts as part of their working day. Concerns about performance, promotion and just plain, old job security worries may also make people feel pressurised into working longer hours. Apart from the usual irritability, inefficiency and general ill health that sleep depravation can lead to, the most concerning issue is the effect tiredness has on the ability to concentrate and drive safely.

There are currently no tests to measure or quantify levels of sleep depravation at the scene of a road traffic accident, but Government research has shown that a fifth of all motorway collisions are believed to be the result of drivers falling asleep at the wheel. One in ten crashes on all UK roads are associated with driver fatigue.

Whilst heavy goods drivers have some measure of protection in the form of strict regulations regarding how many hours they can be at the wheel, small firms with perhaps a fleet of vans or sales staff working in the field have no such protection. Travelling sales staff can often log excessive hours behind the wheel, particularly if they have a large ‘patch’ to cover. Although every single one of these drivers knows the risks of fatigue at the wheel, the pressure to ‘get the job done’ is often so great that they take unnecessary risks with both their own and other people’s safety on the road by driving whilst tired. A Gallup poll revealed that 52% of drivers admit to driving whilst tired and at least 100,000 accidents a year involve driver fatigue. Is the driver at fault, or is it the fault of the company, pushing their workers to clock up extra miles and extra hours behind the wheel?

Employers have a duty of care towards every employee, whether they’re based in an office or out on the road. It is really up to the employer to note if a worker is spending excessive hours behind a wheel and to rectify that situation to prevent a possible accident and subsequent claim. Companies with fleets of vehicles pay a great deal in insurance premiums, so it is in their interest to make sure that their drivers are fit to do their job as safely as possible. Otherwise they could find their insurance premiums climbing rapidly if the organisation suffers a spate of accidents due to driver fatigue. You wouldn’t ask someone who’s worked a 12-hour day to operate a complex piece of machinery in a workshop, so why is it assumed that asking them to drive a car or van (a complex piece of machinery) under the same conditions is acceptable?

Specialist claims solicitors who work specifically in the accidents at work arena are hoping that, by drawing attention to the alarming statistics that surround SRVAs, they may see a decline in the number of claims brought where driver fatigue is cited as the primary cause of the accident. But the concern is that with continued economic pressure to perform, a target-orientated work environment and worries over job security, drivers are still dicing with their lives and those of other road users by driving whilst tired.

At one point or another, we may suffer from tiredness and lack of energy.

At one point or another, we may suffer from tiredness and lack of energy. However, if you feel tired almost all the time, you may want to find remedies for tiredness, as it might lead to serious problems, or could be a symptom of an underlying condition.

Many factors can cause tiredness. If you do not get enough sleep and rest, the first thing you may have the next day is a tired body. If you constantly do not get enough sleep, it may also lead to persistent tiredness and fatigue. Tiredness related to insomnia and sleep problems can be remedied by finding ways to deal with your sleep problems.

Other causes of tiredness may be physical or psychological. Depression and anxiety are also among those that can cause tiredness. Alcohol and eating disorders like bulimia can also be culprits. If you want to end your bouts of tiredness and restlessness, you may want to find remedies for tiredness that are natural and safe for your body. Here are some that may be useful for you.

Start your day with meditation and exercise. Exercising in the morning will help boost your energy for the entire day. It does not only make you active and stimulated but it will also help you put to a good night sleep. Meditation in the morning is also a good exercise for your mind. This will help you focus and concentrate on the task for the day. It can also help in relieving your body from stress that is causing you tiredness.

Exercising regularly is probably one of the most effective remedies for tiredness and relieving stress in the body which also contributes to persistent tiredness and fatigue. Morning exercise does not only give you a boost of energy for the entire day but also promote your overall well-being. Exercising will also help you lose extra pounds if you are overweight. Being overweight is also another factor that may contribute to your being tired.

Drink plenty of water. Being dehydrated is one reason for your body to feel tired and fatigued.

Eat your breakfast. Skipping your breakfast can lead you to feel tired the whole day. Make sure as well to put more energy foods in your diet. Whole cereals as well as fruits and vegetables in your diet can help give you the energy you need for the day.

Therapies that can help rejuvenate your body are also good remedies for tiredness. Among these are aromatherapy and acupuncture. The ancient practice of acupuncture is said to rejuvenate and help in the release of energy in the body. Aromatherapy on the other hand, is a popular practice using essential oils for a particular purpose. You can ask your aromatherapy experts for aromatherapy blends that can help you energized and invigorated every day.

Alcohol is another cause of tiredness and the best thing you can do about it is avoid it. Experts say that even moderate intake of alcohol can lead to tiredness and fatigue. So if you want to be active and invigorated, get rid of alcohol.

Some herbs are also considered good remedies for tiredness. However, you must be careful that your tiredness is not brought about by pregnancy. If you are pregnant, or you have underlying medical conditions that cause your excessive tiredness, you may want to consult your doctor for guidance on some remedies for tiredness.

Feeling tired can be unproductive, but in our busy lifestyles and demanding jobs, feeling tired is inevitable, and we are always looking for ways on how to overcome tiredness – we take a nap, go to sleep, relax, take a vacation. Somehow, we can always find ways to beat tiredness.

If you are one of those feeling constant tiredness and fatigue, here are some ideas on how to overcome tiredness.

Do a bedroom makeover and make it conducive for a great sleep. One simple cause of tiredness is that, your body lacks the rest it needs. Get a good night sleep to recharge your body. Make your bedroom more inviting for relaxation and sleep, do a little makeover with it. Make sure it will be something inviting to help you treat yourself to a sound sleep. Eight hours of sleep is advisable to give your body renewed energy for the next day, but remember not to oversleep, as this will also make you feel tired the entire day.

Lose weight. If you are overweight, your excess weight must be the cause of your tiredness. You may be tempted to grab a chocolate to help keep you awake for the moment but it can also be adding to your weight problem and leading to more tiredness and fatigue. The best way to overcome tiredness in this case is to lose that extra weight to make your body move around more actively.

Always take your early morning shower. A bath always makes you active and refreshed to start your day, so do not skip that great morning bath to help perk up your mood for the day.

Move those muscles and joints. Exercise is one best thing to help your body function well and stay active. A 20 or 30-minute brisk walking every morning can truly help you stay active all throughout the day. If you are at the office and feeling tired, one way you can give regain energy is to stretch those legs, elbows, hands and arms to give a boost of energy.

Make your home clutter-free. Going home to a house full of clutter is not just stressful to look at but can also be tiresome. Try to make your home a great place to relax and free your mind, and this can be done by having a clean, clutter-free home.

Meditate, relax or have a vacation. One of the best ways to learn how to overcome tiredness is to manage your stress. High levels of stress can indeed lead you to persistent tiredness and fatigue, and what you can do with it is find ways to manage stress.

A lot of people feel tired in the morning when it is time to get up. Most people feel tired some time during the day. The good news is that it is possible to sleep less and have more energy.

The reasons for tiredness vary depending on the individual. Sometimes it is easy to find the cause, for example illness or anxiety. But sometimes it is not possible to find the cause or it may be a combination of different factors. Some people feel tired once in a while but some others are feeling tired most of the time.

Most of the popular ways of getting rid of fatigue don’t work. A lot of medication is available but as a long term solution medication has a lot of disadvantages. Sleeping more sounds like the best solution but for many that does not help. Sleeping more can actually make you more tired. It is not the quantity of sleep that is important, the quality is much more important.

There are a number of people who think the way to get rid of tiredness is to drink more coffee and other drinks containing caffeine. While caffeine delivers a quick energy boost, it is a short-lived boost. After a while you feel even more tired than before. If you try to get more energy by drinking coffee or using medication, you are trying to fix the symptom, not the cause. This is the wrong way, it is always better to try to fix the cause rather than the symptom.

One very interesting solution is to pay attention to your sleep cycle. A sleep cycle is made up of different sleep phases. For most people a sleep cycle last about 90 minutes, so during the night a number of sleep cycles are completed. By waking up at the end of a sleep cycle you feel much more energized than if you get up in the middle of a sleep cycle.

Sleeping during the day is generally a bad idea, you don’t get more energy and you may have trouble falling asleep in the evening. But short naps, often called power naps, done the right way can boost your energy.

The main benefit of sleeping less is that you have more time for other activities. But not only that, you have more energy to get more things done during the day. Given such advantages, it is well worth trying to optimize your sleep, even if it can be uncomfortable in the beginning.

Are you waking up in the mornings feeling drained, does it take you ages to get going and come lunchtime, you just want to go to bed? Permanent exhaustion is a widespread problem. Our lifestyles demand that we keep going, going, going, no matter what our bodies are telling us. We are forever packing more into our day and having a rest is fawned upon as being lazy.

Tiredness has also a number of unpleasant side effects: It makes us feel irritable, we get stressed more easily, solving even the slightest problem can appear like attempting to climb Mount Eveverest. When you are permanently tired you simply cannot function effectively. Tiredness can affect your entire life, including your job, your relationships and of course your health. Since everything you do takes longer when you are feeling tired, you are constantly exacerbating the problem creating more stress for yourself.

Fortunately, modern energy therapy provides us with quick and effective methods to change this unpleasant state of affairs really quickly:

Let us take a look what tiredness really means: Tiredness simply means that your vibrational energy levels are below par. This in turn affects our thinking. Negative, limiting thinking equals low energy whilst positive, constructive thinking equals high energy levels. Therefore, when you are feeling tired, you will want an easy and quick way to raise your vibrational energies. You can do this by applying energy therapy.

EFT, Emotional Freedom Technique, is my preferred tool for the job. Within minutes EFT will lift you out of your tiredness, boosting your energy levels. Your mind becomes sharper, almost instanteneously, you feel more positive and of course you get more jobs done faster, as your system re-energises itself.

Sounds too good to be true? Let me share with you why EFT is so simple, powerful and effective
.
When using EFT you focus the mind on a specific problem, tiredness, for example, whilst at the same time tapping with your fingertips on a number of meridian points to stimulate the body’s energy system. Mind focus together with the action of physical tapping is a very fast way to change your vibrational energy almost instantaneously.

As you feel your energy increasing you dissolve any resistance to changing your mind state. You now move effortlessly into problem solving mode. You continue tapping and focusing on the issue you wish to resolve.

By tuning into the vibrational frequency of your emotional state you can change it quickly thus releasing the unwanted emotion and creating the space for positive thoughts and feelings to enter. As a result your emotional state can be changed in a matter of minutes. I use EFT on anything. When I feel tired and exhausted I do a few rounds of tapping. It always restores my energetic equilibrium, allowing me to be persistently creative in my job and come up with solutions to problems, no matter how challenging they first appear. Anyone can learn EFT easily and quickly. Give yourself a gift, and learn EFT, I promise you, you will wonder how you coped without it.

Mercedes Oestermann van Essen is an Advanced EFT Practitioner and Energy Therapist who consults worldwide via the Internet. Solve problems quickly and easily.

3:17PM – it was the time that I used to look at the clock on my computer every day during the work week. It was the time that signified that I was running on fumes. My energy levels plummeted and my motivation to work disappeared. It took every ounce of willpower not to crawl under my desk and take a nap. If you are like I was you also try to baby-step through the rest of the day. You want to order out because you don’t have the energy to make dinner and you let the TV keep the kids occupied. There’s a sink full of dishes that you skip doing just so you can crawl into bed for what you hope is a good night sleep, just to start all over again the next day. This probably sounds familiar, right?

The good news is that you don’t have to remain tired and unproductive. There are several easy, natural ways to increase energy levels and break out of the cycle of lethargy that binds you. Read on to see a few of the small and simple steps you can take to recharge and reclaim your life.

1. How and when you eat can drastically affect your energy levels. Try breaking your meals into several snack-sized portions and spread them throughout the day – eat every 2 hours or so. Protein rich foods such as nuts and eggs are great for increasing your energy. They’re also excellent brain food, so by eating them you maintain and perhaps even improve memory and concentration.

2. Caffeine and sugar can actually hurt your performance. Both help you feel better in the short term, but because the crash will inevitably come, your energy levels will most likely be even lower than before. If you’re going to have a caffeinated drink or a candy bar, it’s best to have it in the morning so it will burn off a little quicker. Save your afternoon for energy maintenance.

3. A multi-vitamin can go a long way towards balancing your nutritional needs and they help your immune system. Fiber supplements work to control blood sugar and keep you regular. They also help you feel full for longer after you eat, so instead of thinking about food, you’ll be waist deep in that spreadsheet you need to concentrate on.

4. Sleep is vital to renewing your energy levels. I’ve found that quality trumps quantity though, so get to know your sleep cycle and practice good sleep hygiene. Do everything you can to ensure that your sleep is productive in recharging those internal batteries.

5. Did you ever notice that when you get stressed or angry, your internal “wick” burns faster? After an emotional discussion with your spouse or a hard, stressful day’s work do you feel tired? Your emotions play a huge part in your level of energy. Try to maintain your emotional stability and you’ll find your energy levels will even out.

6. Stretch. Set a timer and at one hour intervals throughout the day, stretch your muscles or get up and take a walk. This will release the toxins that build up when you’re motionless and allow you to distress your body. Be sure to drink lots of water during the day to help flush those toxins out.

If you want to increase energy , try just one of these tips and then slowly add more as you feel comfortable. In no time you’ll see that there is a way out of the inertia and into an energetic and healthy lifestyle.
